How to Choose the Right Sofa Size for Your Room

The most beautiful sofa in the world is a mistake if it doesn't fit your room. Before you fall in love with a silhouette, spend ten minutes with a tape measure — it's the least glamorous step in furniture shopping and by far the most important.

Start with the wall. Measure the length of the wall or space where the sofa will live, then subtract at least a few inches on each side so the piece has room to breathe. A sofa crammed wall-to-wall makes a room feel smaller, not larger.

Mind the walkways. Leave roughly 30 to 36 inches for main traffic paths around the sofa, and about 14 to 18 inches between the sofa and the coffee table — close enough to reach your drink, far enough to stretch your legs.

Think about depth, not just width. A deep, lounge-style sofa is heaven for tall people and loungers, but it can leave shorter sitters without back support. If you love a deep seat, plan on extra throw pillows to bridge the gap.

Don't forget the journey in. The single most overlooked measurement is the doorway, hallway, stairwell, or elevator your sofa has to travel through to reach its spot. Measure the narrowest point on the delivery path and compare it to the sofa's dimensions before you order.

Every product page on our site lists full dimensions — width, depth, height, and seat height — so you can plan with confidence. And because our pieces are made to order, our team is always happy to talk through fit before you commit. When in doubt, measure twice and order once.
